Improve credit
Improve your credit: what to fix first
Scores recover. Not overnight, and not because someone charged you for it — but through a small number of things that genuinely work, done in the right order, consistently over months.

Start here: what should you fix first?
Find the first line that describes you. Fix that before anything further down — the order matters more than the effort.
| If this is you | Fix this first | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| You have not read your credit report this year | Get your free report from each bureau and read every line. You cannot fix what you have not seen. | Get your free reports |
| Something on your report is wrong or not yours | Dispute it, free, with the bureau holding it. Errors are the one thing that can be removed. | How disputes work |
| A payment is overdue right now | Bring the account current. An overdue account keeps counting against you until it is. | Missed EMIs and recovery |
| Your report shows a settlement or write-off | Understand what it means before you plan anything else — it changes what can be fixed and how long it takes. | Settled vs closed |
| Your card balances are high against your limits | Bring balances down, and pay before the statement generates, not just before the due date. | Plan the paydown |
| You were rejected, or applied several times recently | Stop applying. Find out which factor is likely working against you, and fix that one. | Loan Rejection Decoder |
| You are new to credit, not behind on it | Build a record first. A secured card against a fixed deposit reports history without needing an approval you cannot get yet. | Cards for thin files |
| None of the above | Keep every payment on time and utilisation low, apply for nothing new, and re-check in a few months. | What moves the number |
What actually moves the number
Credit scoring in India weighs a handful of factors. These are the ones you control, in rough order of impact. For how each one works in detail, see how to improve your CIBIL score.
| Factor | What to do | How fast it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Payment history | Pay in full, before the due date, every month without exception | Months, and it compounds |
| Credit utilisation | Keep balances low against your limit; pay before the statement generates, not just before the due date | One to two cycles |
| Hard enquiries | Stop applying. Every application leaves a mark whether or not you are approved | Improves as old enquiries age |
| Credit age | Keep your oldest card open, even if you barely use it | Years — this is why closing old cards hurts |
| Credit mix | A mix of card and loan history helps, but never borrow purely to improve a score | Slow, and the least important |
Errors are a separate problem, and they are free to fix
Mistakes do appear on credit reports. Unlike genuine history, they can be corrected — and raising a dispute costs nothing.
Commonly disputable
- An account showing as open that you closed
- A loan marked "settled" that you actually paid in full
- Days-past-due recorded against a payment you made on time
- An outstanding balance on a closed account
- Duplicate entries for the same loan
- Accounts that are not yours at all — name or PAN mismatches
Not disputable
- A default that genuinely happened
- Late payments you genuinely made late
- A settlement you genuinely agreed to
Filing a dispute against information you know to be accurate is not a grey area. Don't.
Under the RBI (Credit Information Companies) Directions, 2025 (para 41), a complaint must be resolved within 30 days of filing; if it is not, you are entitled to ₹100 for every calendar day of delay. If it is not resolved, or the reply is unsatisfactory, you can escalate free of charge through the RBI's complaint system at cms.rbi.org.in.
The four bureaus
India has four credit bureaus: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark. The RBI requires banks and NBFCs to be members of all four and to report your accounts to all of them, so the same error can appear in several reports — and each report needs its own dispute.
Each bureau that holds your history must give you one free full credit report, including your score, every calendar year — up to four free reports a year. How to get each one.
A realistic plan
Pull all four reports
Free, once a year each, directly from the bureaus. Read every line. Note anything you do not recognise.
Separate errors from history
Dispute the errors, free, with each bureau holding them. Accept the accurate history and plan around it.
Six months of discipline
Full payments before the due date, low utilisation before the statement date, and no new applications. Then re-check.
How long this takes
A genuine dispute has to be resolved within 30 days. Improvement through utilisation and payment discipline typically shows over several months, and history-driven factors like credit age take years by definition.
Anyone offering a faster answer is selling one.
